Somehow He Believes Her
WHY I WROTE THE SONG

Somehow He Believes Her
(The Christmas story as quoted from Matthew 1:18-23, Isaiah 7:14, Luke 1:39,40,56, Luke 2:1,4-7.) "The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn't know that. Because Joseph was a righteous man, he did not want to expose her to public disgrace, so he had in mind to divorce her quietly. While he was trying to figure a way out, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said: "Joseph, son of David, don't hesitate to get married. Mary's pregnancy is conceived from the Holy Spirit. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus - 'God saves' - because he will save his people from their sins". All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet (Isaiah): "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel - 'God with us'. " ... At that time, Mary got ready and hurried to a town in the hill country of Judea, straight to her relatives, Zechariah and Elizabeth. ... Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months and then returned home. ... About that time Caesar Augustus ordered a census to be taken throughout the Empire. ... So Joseph went from the Galilean town of Nazareth up to Bethlehem in Judah, David's town, for the census.... He went with Mary, his fiancee, who was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for her to give birth. She gave birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in cloths and laid him in a feeding trough, because there was no room in the inn."

I think it's about time we got back to the reality of what the Christmas story would have really been like for Mary and Joseph, and all the people in their town. The story has become so washed out, that nowadays, the stable looks more like a cozy, rustic hotel room, and there's no mention of the smell of cow manure and stinky animals.

When I was young, I always wanted to be 'Mary' in our church Christmas play. It seemed like such a glorious part. But what was it really like for Mary? In those days, girls were stoned for getting pregnant out of wedlock. The angel appeared to her -- not anyone else -- and told her what was going on. But what about all the people who didn't get an explanation from the angel? -- Like the 'town gossip', who is telling the story in this song, and all the other non-believers? Even Joseph didn't believe her story and decided to divorce her, that is, until the angel appeared to him in a dream and confirmed Mary's story.

And what did Mary's parents have to go through with all the gossip that would have been going on? It certainly is food for thought.

She was just an innocent teenager, how could this ever be?
All the town is talkin' 'bout her, how she disgraced her family.
I heard she told her true love she was a girl who'd wait
He went away for the summer, - guess he came back too late
All of his dreams were shattered, she has to hide away
He's getting' sick and tired hearing what people say
She's got a crazy story, somethin' 'bout heaven's glory
He should just walk away, leave her alone to pay
But somehow he believes her.

She's staying with her cousin in the next town a couple hours away
Guess she'll have to stay awhile, at least until the gossip fades
I heard that he still loves her, wants her to be his wife
Won't say a bad thing about her, won't try to justify
Everyone's talkin' bout him, how come he just can't see?
Laughin' behind his back cuz somehow he still believes
In all of her crazy story, somethin' bout heaven's glory
He should just walk away, leave her alone to pay
But somehow he believes her.

(She's got a crazy story) , Somehow he believes her
(Sent from heaven's glory) Somehow he believes her

The other day, I heard she had the baby - it was a boy
They don't care no more what anybody's sayin' - He's such a joy!
I heard she named him Jesus - heaven's gift from above
Says that He came here to save us and teach us how to love
Everyone's talkin' bout him sayin' he's the King of Kings
Bringing him baby gifts while all the angels sing
She had a crazy story, something bout heaven's glory
He didn't walk away, so glad he chose to stay
Cause somehow he believed her.

(It was a crazy story) Somehow he believed her

(Sent from heaven's glory) somehow he believed her.
